The number of grad students at BMSC varies with the time of year. In the summer, there can be around 20 (or more) graduate students on-site, while last December there were 5 of us. There are of course many others on-site, including full-time staff, students taking summer courses or the well-known Fall Program, researchers, and visitors for special events like the 40th anniversary celebration or the Music By The Sea festival, but if you are a graduate student coming out here for the first time, you’ll want to get in touch with the BMSC graduate students.
The BMSC Graduate Student Society gives a great primer on what you’ll need to know to live out here, and offers a variety of activities and support including:
- Social events such as potlucks, beach trips, and bonfires.
- 2 kayaks and 1 canoe available for grad student use (first come, first served)
- Academic support (with NSERC applications due soon, several students have been helping each other out with their proposals)
- Sports equipment for activities onsite.
Also, it’s a good way to meet the grad students working around you. Check us out when you come into town!
